<image:caption>"In 1938 I was sent to the Spokane Art Center in Washington to arrange exhibitions under the auspices of the WPA government project. As the New Year of 1939 approached my wife and I decided to send a series of season's greetings to our many friends in New York City. I decided on the playful form of collage. Armed with yellowing books on engineering, mid-Victorian Manners and horse disease which I had picked up on the stall of an old bookshop, I began to scissor and glue fragments from these arcane works. None of the mailed greetings were ever preserved nor were they expected to be. But in warming up to the series I produced an overflow which I somehow saved.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - My Easel, oil on canvas, 20 x 10, 1935</image:title>
<image:caption>Acclaimed artists often have a seminal work, marking a pivotal point that drew them in a new direction – defining their later work and, in some cases, even their careers. According to Joseph Solman (1909-2008), the intimate canvas of My Easel, painted in 1935, was an epiphany that led to his breakthrough Studio Interiors work. What makes the piece so fascinating is that while the easel anchors the composition, a dynamic tension plays out between studio objects and the outside view. He later said that he could now define "a Solman" work, reading his own style and visual vocabulary. My Easel was published in Solman's first book by Crown Press in 1965.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Diagonals, oil on board, 20 x 12, 1940</image:title>
<image:caption>In the late 1930s, Solman moved his attention from New York City street scenes, and brought his canvas indoors. Increasingly fascinated with the interplay of geometry, shifting light and perspective, he recognized that even humble rooms and objects opened a whole new world. Painted in 1940, Diagonals is an exquisite work in which you see something new each time you view it. Whether it is subtle visual drama or tension, the painting is always alive. Published as the frontispiece in Solman’s first book by Crown Press in 1964, it has been in a private collection for many years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Still Life with Whisk Broom is an outstanding example of Joseph Solman's studio paintings. In the 1940s, Solman turned his attention toward the play of shifting light on the humble and mundane objects that inhabited his studio. The works he produced using this subject matter, however, were anything but humble and brought him extensive critical acclaim. Work from this era is rare and Still Life with Whisk Broom is an exceptional example.</image:caption>

In the 1940s and early 50s, Solman turned his attention toward the play of shifting light on the humble and mundane objects that inhabited his and other artist's studios. The works he produced using this subject matter, however, were anything but humble and brought him extensive critical acclaim.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hallway is a superb example of Joseph Solman's 1960s era work. This painting remained with the artist for many years and has been held in a private collection since 1986. Solman believed that we can find beauty in our own surroundings, no matter how mundane they might be. A lamppost, storefront, balustrade or hallway often became subject matter for his work. The play of shifting light, the juxtaposition of sightlines or panoply of hues gave meaning to otherwise humble places and objects that were a part of his world. The paintings he produced using this subject matter, however, were anything but humble and brought him extensive critical acclaim.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The natural beauty and light of Cape Ann has always been a powerful lure for artists. For Joseph Solman, who began summering here during the 1940s, it also represented an escape from the quickened pace of New York life. Solman was intrigued by the vitality and light of Cape Ann towns, frequently finding interesting perspectives in out of the way places. Harvey Park was painted from what was then Ellen's Harborside Restaurant (today the Red Skiff) across the street from the park. Solman was captivated by the scene framed by the window and has left us with an intimate view of the town from an era gone by. Viewers may note the two brown columns dividing this piece into thirds and question if it is a triptych. It is not; they are actually the frame of the restaurant window.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Garage, oil on canvas, 24x18, 1980</image:title>
<image:caption>A remarkable part of Joseph Solman's repertoire includes drawings and paintings of New York City. During the 1930s he had painted the streets, then in the 1980s returned to that subject. Now, however, his palate was much lighter and more colorful than before, perhaps influenced by his years experimenting with oil on paper monotypes and Sumi ink drawings inspired by Asian art. Solman loved the energy of the city. Everything he saw told a story - the lamppost, the building being torn down, the metal gate, and the store front were all objects of fascination and quickly became subjects for his work. He delighted in simplifying a composition to elements of design and redefining the essence of a scene into something that innately speaks to us on a very human level. Garage is a splendid example of just this sort of story.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Venice, oil on board, 24 x 16, 1985</image:title>
<image:caption>Provenance: From the collection of Harold and Lucette White On Joseph Solman's first trip to Venice in the 1950s he didn't paint or sketch he simply marvelled, calling the city on water, "a scene almost frightening in its beauty." It wasn't until many visits later in the 1980s that he began to sketch. On one trip he spent 26 days exploring every facet of the city and came upon a scene which stuck in his mind. On evening walks he crossed over a bridge spanning a long canal where the city lights reflected a lone gondola. Solman felt it was magical, like a scene out of a movie. Returning to New York he painted in the same manner he had in the 1930s. As he worked from sketches and notes, scenes came to life in his studio. His Venice work took years and was not completed until 1985. The piece you see above, and one companion, are his two sole paintings of Venice. Solman regarded his work from Venice as among the finest of his entire art career. (Above text based on the essay Recollections of Joseph Solman in Venice by Paul Solman, 2003)</image:caption>

<image:caption>A remarkable part of the Solman repertoire includes many drawings and paintings of the streets of New York City. The building being torn down, the metal gate, lamppost, or store front were all objects of fascination and quickly became subjects for his work. He delighted in simplifying a composition to elements of design and redefining the essence of a scene into something that innately speaks to us on a very human level.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Joseph Solman and his friend Alice Neal (1900-1984) were among the most interesting portrait painters of their generation. Neal painted her emotional interpretation of the subject while Solman painted what he saw in the sitter. During 1937 Joseph Solman painted a series of seven self-portraits. These were not intended as a series nor were they planned. He simply kept delving deeper, with each successive piece becoming more exuberant and confident. Solman told those who commissioned portraits from him, "I paint what I see in you, don't expect a glamorized image of yourself". We can assume that the same held true with his self-portraits. Looking at this example (#7), we see a handsome young man with neatly cropped hair sitting upright in front of his easel. His eyes are in shadow and the corner of his mouth slightly up turned, perhaps the expression of someone truly looking at himself for the first time and not quite sure what to make of the man in the mirror.</image:caption>
